Big Boy Room

Hi Everyone!

Being a mom of two little ones has kept me very busy the past couple months!  I’m back today to share my son’s big boy room with you all.  I still can’t believe my little guy is big enough for a big boy room!  A few months after we found out we were pregnant with our second child I started dreaming and planning for my son’s big boy room.  We decided to keep the nursery where it was and move him to the spare bedroom.  I worked on his big boy room for several weeks all the while not letting my little guy know so that it could be a surprise.

He loved his big boy adventure room when we did the big reveal.  It was so fun to see him so excited and appreciative.  I really love how it turned out!

We loved the bookcase in my son’s nursery (people always ask where we got it) so we ordered another one (just slightly different) for his big boy room.  It works great when you don’t have a lot of extra room for something like a book case.  We got it from pottery barn kids and waited till we got a coupon in my email.  Then we ordered it by phone and had it shipped to the store (free shipping) which also saved us money.

These vintage plane printables were free!! Can you believe that?!  I found them on pinterest and they were my inspiration piece for the room.  I didn’t want to be limited to airplanes so I decided to go with the “adventure” theme.  Finding free printables online is a great way to save money when decorating.

I love how his gallery wall came out.  I ordered this National Geographic map from Amazon.  It was a great price and the colors were perfect.  Another great way to save money when decorating is to shop your own house.  I already had the clipboard, frames, and hanger and along with the free printables (sources below) this gallery wall was very inexpensive.

He may be in a big boy room now, but there is still a place for Kermi 😉

Many of the things I used in his big boy room I had in his nursery.  It saved me a lot of money by using some of the same colors in his adventure room.  I used navy and green again and added orange and brown.  It looks like a totally different room, but I was able to use many of the same things.

I love decorating my home with things that have a history or special meaning.  The bear lamp was made by my mother-in-law’s parents.  They were skilled potters.  My son has admired this lamp for a long time at grandma and poppy’s house so he was very excited to see it in his room!  The little orange plane in the picture above was in my brother’s room growing up.  And the little gray metal tool box on his dresser was my dad’s.

My little guy is so proud of his big boy room and loves to show it off to everyone who comes over.  It was a lot of fun to design and put together this room and a big thanks to my sweet hubby for all his hard work as well!

Friday Favorites: All About Them Scarves

Yay we’ve made it to Friday!  Today I’m linking up with A Little Bit of Everything, Momfessionals and Grace & Love to share Friday Favorites.

This post is all about them scarves!  I love scarves!  My husband will tell you that I have way too many, but I always tell him that you can NEVER have too many scarves!  They are the perfect accessory and take any outfit up a notch.  I always feel more put together when I throw one on.  Scarves are also a great way to incorporate color and prints into your wardrobe.  They come in so many patterns and textures and can be worn anytime of the year; lightweight fabric during the spring and summer and heavier knits in the fall and winter.  I love packing scarves when I travel, they are light, compact and change the look of an outfit even if you wear the same shirt twice!  There are so many ways to tie a scarf; just search Pinterest and you will find step by step instructions.  You can find some of my pins on my Fashion Ideas Board.  If you find tying scarves intimidating, buy an infinity scarf.  Simply hang around your neck, loop around once and pull one loop slightly longer than the other!

I’ve wrangled up some of my favorites to share with you today, including some favorites from my wardrobe.  I will probably be adding a few more to my collection after finding some of these beautiful ones while working on this post (shh…don’t tell my husband)!  Some of my favorite places to buy scarves are H&M, Nordstrom, Target, Old Navy and Kohl’s.  I always find really great deals at each of these stores.  Every wardrobe needs a floral print, solid knit and plaid scarf.

A floral print scarf adds a soft feminine look to any outfit.  Purchase one with lots of colors so you can wear with several different shirts or blouses.  These light floral prints are perfect for the spring and summer seasons and are lightweight so you don’t get too hot.

Floral Print Scarves

1. Crinkle Floral Infinity Scarf  | 2. Navy Floral Scarf

3. Dandelion Print Infinity Scarf | 4. Floral Woven Scarf

Solid knit scarves can be worn over patterned or solid tops.  They are warm and cozy in the winter and perfect for layering.

Solid Knit Scarves

1. Coral Sweater Knit Infinity Scarf  |  2. White Tube Scarf

3. Olive Tassel Scarf   |  4. Light Gray Fringe Scarf

Plaid, hounds-tooth and buffalo check…I mean how can you go wrong?!  To me they are very classic and never go out of style (now you have Taylor Swift’s song in your head don’t you?  I do! :) ).  Great option if you aren’t a fan of color and have a more neutral wardrobe.  Be sure to check out the men’s department too when looking for plaid scarves!

Plaid and Check Scarves

1.  Plaid Tassel Infinity Scarf  |  2. Black and White Hounds-tooth Scarf

3.  Plaid Infinity Scarf  |  4. Multicolored Oversized Plaid Scarf  |  5. Buffalo Plaid Infinity Scarf

Which scarf is your favorite and where do you like to shop for scarves?  Leave a comment below!

Have a wonderful weekend friends!

Chalk Markers by Chalk This Way

Our obsession with chalkboards started as little girls, as we played school together taking turns as teachers writing lessons on the chalkboard.  Combined it is safe to say that we have over 10 chalkboards displayed in our homes!  When we were contacted by Chalk This Way to review their Brilliant Bold and Earthy chalk markers, we knew it was the perfect fit!  Some of our favorite seasonal, party and entertaining decor are chalkboard signs written with chalk markers.  Chalkboard signs are inexpensive, can be re-used for multiple events and the best part is you can personalize messages to fit the occasion.

Brilliant Bold Colors

Earthy Colors

It is really great to be able to buy one pack with so many color options and they are competitive in price with local craft stores!  You can even save money when buying multiple packs!  One thing we really love about the Chalk This Way chalk markers as opposed to some other brands we have used is that the ink really looks chalky and not just like a marker.  It looks more authentic on your chalkboard.  We also found that these markers had low odor; you aren’t breathing in heavy fumes during normal use.

We really like the soft muted tones of the Earthy set.  We haven’t seen chalk markers in these colors before.  They would be perfect for fall party or wedding signage.  They are a bit more elegant than your classic colors.  Two of our favorites from this pack is the deep cranberry and sage green (they don’t name their colors, but that is how we would describe them :) ).  Can’t wait to use them for Christmas signage this season.  The Brilliant Bold colors give a nice pop of color for birthday parties or holidays.  The classic white chalk marker came in both sets, which we loved because we tend to use that color the most.  These sets would be a great gift for the crafters in your life!  With Christmas right around the corner these would be perfect stocking stuffers!

Tried and True Tips:

  • Make sure you shake the markers REALLY well before using them.  If you don’t, it will come out as just greasy wet with no color.  Always shake with the lid on!
  • You have to push the tip into paper several times to get the color to drop down into the tip.  Try to push more on the back of the tip instead of the front so that the tip doesn’t get smashed.
  • Make sure to test markers on surface before use.  They are not recommended on porous surfaces.  (If you use them and something porous and it doesn’t come off you can just re-paint the surface with chalkboard spray paint)
  • The markers come off better with water when you don’t wait too long to wipe it off.  Directions say you can also erase with ammonia based cleaner.
  • Don’t push tips too hard when writing.  This will smash the tip.  To get more color to the tip of your marker, shake every now and again in between writing your message.  Again make sure to shake when the lid is on!

Check out some of the ways we used Chalk This Way chalk markers.  You will see, the possibilities are truly endless!  You can use these markers on chalkboards (including slate chalkboards), glass, plastics, mirrors, ceramics, metals and other hard non porous surfaces.

Seasonal signage and decor.  The chalk markers worked really well on this slate chalkboard and cleaned very easily with a wet cloth.

Slate Chalkboard

Make signs for different activity stations at parties like we did here at our Fall Festival:

pumpkin carving

Parties galore!  The possibilities are endless with this one.  You could make chalkboard place-mats and let kids (and adults!) doodle.  Or you could write out your menu or make chalkboard labels for food like Alisa did here for her husband’s 30th birthday party:

Menu & Food Labels

Marissa used the chalk markers to make a wreath to welcome guests to her son’s 2nd birthday party.

Monthly baby updates and yearly milestones: I (Marissa) took a picture of my little man each month for the first year with a chalkboard behind him documenting milestones.  You could also do this with Baby bump pictures while you are pregnant documenting the weeks.  I had a lot of fun doing this chalkboard for my son’s second birthday!

b-day sign 2

B-day sign

Leave messages or encouraging notes on your bathroom mirror for your spouse to read in the morning.  This is sure to brighten their day! The chalk markers work great on mirrors.  They wipe off REALLY easy on mirrors with glass cleaner.

Notes on Mirror

Here are some other ways that you could use the markers for different projects:

  • Signs for weddings…all things weddings really anything from seating charts to menus to signage on tables.
  • You can show team pride by writing messages on your car (always test on a small area first!) like “Go Wildcats!” or “Great job Kelsey!”
  • Use all the different colors on a black board instead of just plain old boring white when teaching or explaining things to your kiddos.
  • Decorate your windows with your kids for the holidays by drawing fun pictures for the season.
  • Label glazed pots with plant or herb names.

Be sure to check out other products by Chalk This Way like their Self-Adhesive Removable Chalkboard Labels.

Thank you Chalk This Way for providing us with the chalk markers!  As always, all ideas and opinions are our own.

A Small Way To Give Back

Do you all follow Ashley Ann over at Under The Sycamore?  Her blog is one of my favorite blogs to read.  She is so genuine and uses her voice to do great things and advocates for those who don’t have a voice.  I took her Snap Shop course (online iphone photography course) and loved it!  I have even corresponded with her through email a bit and she has a heart of gold.  A couple weeks ago she wrote a post about the Frosty Coupon Book that Wendy’s is selling now through October 31st.

For $1 you can purchase a coupon book that includes 5 Jr. Frosty Coupons.  $0.90 of that dollar goes towards the Dave Thomas Foundation for adoption.  You can read more about the heart behind it on her original post here.  I love finding little ways to give back.  Sometimes the problems of the world seem so large, but there are lots of little steps like these coupon books that we can take to make a difference in people’s lives.   And I loved Ashley’s idea of giving them as gifts.  So this was a no brainer for me.  While my little guy and I were out the other day we drove by a Wendy’s and purchased some of the coupon books to give as gifts!  (We also had ourselves a little Jr. Frosty treat!)

Make sure to check out Ashley’s post for some fun and adorable ways to gift the coupons to someone.  I love giving gifts to friends.  It’s one of the ways I can let them know they are important to me and loved.  One of my friends has had a lot going on so I thought these coupons would be a fun gift.  In between running around town on their busy days she can stop and get her kiddos a fun treat!   I decided to use Ashley’s ideas for some inspiration.  Here’s what I came up with:

I thought of a few ways you could give these coupons as gifts:

*they would be great stocking stuffers

*leave one on a co-worker’s desk with a not of appreciation

*gifts to your neighbors

*let your kids earn them as rewards

*surprise a friend with a Jr. Frosty and a coupon on their door step

*give them as gifts for the students in your child’s classroom (With 5 coupons for a dollar that’s a great price to treat the whole class!)

*give one whole coupon book as a teacher appreciation gift

*Have your kiddos save up money to purchase a coupon book and let them give the coupons away as gifts to their friends (a great conversation could be had about the foundation they are supporting by doing this)

*you could give one away to a stranger as a random act of kindness gesture!

*give one to a mom that you know has had a rough week so she can treat her kids to a treat or pick up her kiddos to take them for a treat so she can have some time to herself!! 😉

*surprise your kids with a coupon on their car seat after school and take them for a treat

*surprise your kiddos after they are in their pjs and go get a Frosty at Wendy’s!

If you purchase some I’d love to hear how you give them as gifts!

I hope you all have a great rest of your week!  I’m excited to start surprising friends with Frosty’s coupons!

**This was not a sponsored post.  Just me seeing a way to give back and spreading the word!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Supporting the Cause

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  I’m sure nearly all of us have been affected by this devastating disease in some way or another, whether you or someone you know has or have had breast cancer.  According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.  That is an astonishing number.  Though rare, men are also diagnosed with this disease.  The best way to reduce your risk of breast cancer or catch it in its early stage is to be educated, know your family history and perform monthly self exams.  In fact, according to the National Cancer Institute, when breast cancer is detected early, in the localized stage  the 5 year survival rate is 98%.  So if you haven’t already, be sure to get checked and remind your loved ones too!  Check your insurance coverage, as some plans don’t charge a co-pay for preventative office visits.  Mark your calendar every month to remind you to do a self exam.  To learn more about breast cancer screening and early detection, or to make a donation, here are a few resources you can visit: National Breast Cancer Foundation or Susan G. Komen.  If you are someone you know is battling breast cancer we are praying for you.  If you have a specific prayer request, please feel free to leave us a comment or send us an email.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I’ve rounded up some pink products that raise awareness for breast cancer and many of the companies give proceeds towards organizations that benefit breast cancer.  What is better than shopping  and supporting a wonderful cause?!  These would make great Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers!  Learn more about the products and find links below.  Make sure you scroll all the way down to see some fitness products too.

Friday Favorites

It has been a long and busy week, so I’m glad it is Friday!  Sharing some of my favorite things with you today and Linking up with these fabulous blogs today: A Little Bit of EverythingMomfessionals, & Grace and Love Blog for Friday Favorites and Lauren Elizabeth for High Five for Friday.

#1  I’ve had my eye on these adorable vintage-inspired kitchen towels from Sur La Table.  There are several designs, all with embroidered designs and decorative trim.  I had a coupon so I finally bought one and I’ve got big plans for it…I’ll keep you posted.  There are a lot more options online than in the store, I kind of wish I had seen some of these other options before I made my purchase!  These are a few of my favorites. The pictures really don’t due them justice.

kitchen towels

#2 I’ve been listening to the new album by Paul McDonald and Nikki Reed:  “I’m Not Falling” on repeat.  In fact, I’m listening to it right now!  It is so good; its the type of music I like to have on in the background on a lazy afternoon, or in the evening as I’m winding down.

Im Not Falling

#3 Anyone else getting tired of their summer wardrobe?  I can’t wait for the fall so I can wear boots, scarves, sweaters and long sleeves!  These Henley long sleeve shirts are  such a good price at Target.  I can’t find them online to link to, but they are in stores and they are on sale this week for only $10.00!  I love all the colors, but I couldn’t resist the mint.

#4 Ever since I was younger, one of my favorite things to eat is avocado on toast…I am slightly obsessed.  I’ve already had it for dinner two nights this week.  Served with some fruit or veggies it is a quick and yummy lunch or dinner.  If you haven’t tried it, just toast a piece of sourdough bread, smash a ripe avocado, spread on the toast, add pepper and garlic salt!

avocado on toast

#5 I really enjoy reading or just thumbing through cookbooks and cooking magazines.  My mother-in-law got me a subscription to Food & Family and the fall magazine came in the mail the other day.  Can’t wait to read it Saturday morning!  I’m always on the hunt for dinner ideas.

Food & Family Magazine

Hope you have gotten to know me a little better through all this randomness!  What are some of your favorite things?

Have you all have a fabulous weekend!

Pottery Barn Finds Under $30

I could walk around Pottery Barn for hours (no, seriously I’m not joking…just ask my husband!).  Often I’m getting inspiration, or day dreaming of the things I wish I could take home with me.  Every so often I delightfully stumble upon some great finds, like last night when I was  browsing Pottery Barn online.  Many of the items are on sale, so they are going fast, and prices may change.  Everything shown below, besides the wooden bowl holding the apples, totals less than $250.00.  If you have a promotional code, it’s even less.

Pottery Barn Finds

One | Wood Gallery Frames

Two | Faux Hydrangea Branch

Three | Stassi Metal Hardware

Four | Oxford Turned Wood Pillar Candle Holders

Five | Green Apple Vase Filler

Six | Audrey Eyelet Applique Pillow Cover & Polka Dot Pillow Cover

Seven | Small Tuscan Urn

Eight | Perry Dark Tote Basket

These are some of my favorite decorating pieces.  Every room needs a “natural element” (wood, floral, greenery, fruit) even if it’s fake.  These faux hydrangea branches look great in the Tuscan urn shown above, the best part is you can’t kill them!  I have two of these urns, I love them so much!  The green apples look great in a glass apothecary jar or in a large bowl.  They make great decor in the fall season and everyone always comments on how real they look.

A great way to bring in pattern and texture is through fabrics.  I’ve had my eye on these pillows for a while now, unfortunately I don’t have the need for anymore (I have way to many as it is :) ).  I love a large basket  to store toss pillows and throws.

Have a large empty wall that needs some visual interest?  Try a gallery wall. Vintage botanical prints (like the one shown in our sidebar) would be perfect in the gallery wall frames.

Finally every room needs a DIY element.  Often times the items you make become conversation pieces and give the space a personal touch.  The gold pulls would be great for a little DIY project like this Chic Tray Courtney from A Thoughtful Place created.

I hope you got some decorating inspiration and find something that completes your space.  If you haven’t already, be sure to join Pottery Barn’s emailing list for exclusive sales and promotions.  They frequently offer free shipping and 15% to 20% off promotional codes.

*This post is not sponsored by Pottery Barn, I just like their store and products!
