Mommy Monday: Guest Post- Designs By Vena

Since becoming a mom, I have a real heart for other mamas.  I know how tough motherhood is and how isolating it can be at times.  We are all in this thing together and we should be there for each other; to rejoice in each other’s successes and to comfort each other in tough times.  Along with my heart for other mamas, the Lord has really been cultivating in me a desire to support and encourage other women in their passions.  There are so many ways that life can feel like it’s a competition, (especially in social media) but it doesn’t need to be that way.  We are made to run this race together and spur each other on in love.  I will be the first to admit I do not always do this perfectly, but I am a work in progress.  My passion has become to be a cheerleader for my fellow sisters, my dear friends and those I just meet.  I am so grateful for the many women in my life who cheer me on and encourage me as a wife and mom and who support me in going after what I am passionate about.  This brings me to today’s post!

I am so excited for today’s Mommy Monday guest post by my friend Vena Hallahan.  Before I had my son, I was a third grade teacher and had the privilege of having Vena’s son in my class.  We’ve reconnected on social media.  Vena is a mom of four and a small business owner.  She makes the most gorgeous custom wood signs!  I asked her to share her passion with you all and give some ways that she balances being a wife, mom, and business owner.  Today, I want to celebrate another mom and her passion with you all.

Hi everyone my name is Vena Hallahan.  I was asked by Marissa to write a guest blog for today’s Mommy Monday post.  I know Marissa from her years of teaching school.  She had my son in her 3rd grade class a few years back.  I, like Marissa, taught school when I was first married and as soon as I had my first child my husband and I decided it would be best for me to stay home and raise our growing family.  I have had the privilege to be a stay at home mom for almost 13 years now!!

Over the years I have found many projects and activities to keep busy, but it was not until this past year that I have found a hobby that I feel has become my passion, creating hand painted wooden signs.

Last year my mother-in-law stepped out in faith and opened an adorable shop in Lakeside called Krisarah’s Boutique.  During this time I also had been praying about how I would start to bring in a little money to help out our family and keep my creative mind happy. My youngest child was 3 at the time and her getting older allowed for me to have a little more freedom to create and work on projects.   I had been pinning many ideas off of Pinterest (which I love) as possible creative outlets. I just adored the wood signs all over Pinterest and  I also took a step of faith and decided to try my hand at making my own.  With my handy husband cutting my boards and helping me my little business was born.  I named it Designs by Vena.  I had never painted before and was just excited to have something to put in my mother-in-law’s shop.  To my great surprise I have made over 100 signs and keep busy with many custom orders and signs for the boutique in Lakeside.  With 4 kids ranging in ages for 12-4 I do not get a lot of time to work on my paintings.  I have found a way to get at least 2-3 hours a day usually when my youngest is napping. I try to keep a healthy balance of family time and work time.

I have created a few signs for children’s rooms.  This one I made for my niece.  It was a special one to make since it was for a family member.

Another customer has decided to have me make signs to give as a gift for birthday presents this year.

This sign was made as a gift for a sweet girl to help her during a difficult time so she could be reminded of God’s love for her.

This one was made as a baby gift.  What a sweet poem and reminder that they grow up so fast and to enjoy each moment.

I thought I would show a collection of some of my best sellers and personal favorites.  I have done a few Family name signs with a wedding date and added scripture or names to make it more personal.  The other signs are just some of my favorites.

You can find these designs and more on my Facebook page Desgins by Vena. I am always adding new designs weekly so if you want to follow my creations please “like” my page and share with others.  If anyone is interested in placing an order you can contact me on my Facebook page or send an email to  designsbyvena@gmail.com.  I am expecting to be busy for the holidays do please allow 3 weeks for any orders.

Thanks so much for the opportunity to share my story.  My encouragement to other moms and crafters, you never know what hidden talents you might have until you take a step of faith.  God has given us all gifts and talents and I feel blessed to be able to share mine with others and hopefully in the process share the love of God.  Blessings.

Aren’t Vena’s signs gorgeous?!!  I LOVE the “Daughter of the king” sign so very much!!  It gives me goosebumps every time I read it.   I’ve had my eye in that one for a while!  😉  If you are local to the San Diego area, Vena sells her signs at her mother-in-laws boutique which is at 9918. Maine Ave.  Lakeside, CA. 92040.   Thank you, Vena, for sharing your talent, your passion, and your heart with us today!

Hope you all have a wonderful week!

  2. I am the lucky owner of the “Caraway” sign. Vena was a student of mine when she was in 7th grade. She was kind and generous then, as she is now. Her Christian beliefs shine through in all she does. She has designed and personalized two signs for me. You would not be disappointed in her work. As a former teacher of her, I am so proud of the mother and woman she has become. As I told her, when she meets our Maker, He will say, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
